When Q-dance asked us to record a special set for their livestream version of Defqon.1 this year we told them we'd be happy to do it and that we'd get back to them after weekend. We made a list of locations we wanted to shoot at, a timeline for the production, the effects shots we'd need and of course a budget we'd try our very best to not exceed.
Our basic idea was to shoot a two-hour video where we'd change locations with every transition between tracks. All these locations would be relevant to the music being played. There would be helicopters and explosions. And sharks! We were fairly certain that we could get this done in under a month (Defqon.1 was one month away) and that they were going to absolutely love it. Our only concern was that they might balk at the costs of the hologram version of Mary Servaes—which would have been a large chunk of the budget—but come on... this is Q-dance. These guys make millions!
When we called them back on Monday and excitedly told them about our plans they mostly said things like, "huh," "what budget," and "wait, you haven't recorded it yet?!" It turns out we only had two days left to record the set and that it could only be 15 minutes.
Long story short... We ended up squeezing a two-hour set into 15 minutes on a budget of zero dollars. Go team!
