Ø [Phase] was drawn to synthesized sound from a young age, his first exposure to Detroit techno came in 1988 by way of a cassette tape recorded for him by an older friend. Although it would take a further five years or so for Ashley Burchett to even begin to realise the significance of those recordings, they were undoubtedly the seeds of a life-long obsession with underground electronic dance music.
Having experienced the developing techno landscape of the Mid 1990’s and witnessed – along the way – some landmark DJ performances from the likes of Richie Hawtin and Derrick May, Ashley began to take his first tentative steps towards music production. His debut track “Module Overload” was promo’d by Steve Bicknell during 1999 and finally released on London’s Lost/Cosmic records in 2000… Since surfacing in 1999, Ashley’s productions have consistently gained the attention of high profile DJ’s and Techno legends such as Derrick May, Jeff Mills and Laurent Garnier. His various works for such prominent labels as London’s lost/Cosmic Records, Inceptive, Belgium’s Token records and Ben Sims’ Ingoma imprint have also featured in CD mixes by Robert Hood, François Kevorkian, Japan’s Fumiya Tanaka, Danny Tengalia and Dave Clarke amongst others…
“I was given the theme ‘warehouse’ for this mix. ‘Warehouse’ to me evokes rumbling bass, reverbs, gritty hats and Acid; hopefully that comes over in my selection. As an additional note I’ve added “Glen 21″ in there too. Listen closely and Glen is speculating on the future from the year 1999. Interesting that his predictions for 20-25 years actually came to pass in just 10, such has been the rapidity of technological advancement.”
